Johannesburg – Pioneer in the development of a national network of zero carbon charging (charging), off-grid, solar-electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in South Africa has secured a R100 million equity investment from the South African Development Bank (DBSA).

The funding will accelerate the country's shift towards a zero-zero transport economy while strengthening climate-bearing infrastructure.

Andries Malherbe, director and co-founder, expressed his gratitude for the investment, saying, “The show of faith by DBSA is more than just financial. It's symbolic. We are truly grateful.”

Capital injection supports the charging mission of installing ultra-high-speed EV charging stations every 150 km along the national highway.

Each site operates completely off-grid with solar energy and battery storage, eliminating dependency on ESKOM and reducing range anxiety for EV drivers.

Lebogang Seperepere, executive of the proxy group for DBSA's project preparation, highlighted the wider impact. “We are pleased to have invested R100 million to support zero carbon charge off-grid EV charging.

Charge's model not only promotes clean mobility, but also provides concrete benefits to the rural economy.

Landowners hosting charging stations receive 5% of their annual electricity revenue, providing a stable revenue stream amidst the uncertainty of the climate.

Additionally, each site will promote local job creation, support farm stalls, and stimulate economic activity in underserved areas.

Jubertreux, founder of Zero Carbon Charge, praised DBSA's role, saying, “We praise DBSA for its unwavering professionalism and commitment throughout the entire due diligence process. We are determined to honor and provide their support.”

DBSA's Product Innovation Unit focuses on high-impact infrastructure projects that drive environmental and socioeconomic progress.

The integrated approach of renewable energy, EV infrastructure and rural development is perfectly in line with this vision.

With this R100 million investment, zero carbon fees are set to transform South Africa's transportation environment, demonstrating that sustainable energy and comprehensive growth are closely linked.
