The rhythmic throbbing of running shoes is set to echo the city of Cape Town again as two Ocean's Marathons prepare for the 54th edition. Since its humble beginnings in 1970, this iconic event has evolved into a powerful engine for the country's tourism, investment and talent development. With over 30,000 runners from 98 countries, the marathon offers more than just a race. This is a celebration of endurance, community and global appeal that contributes greatly to the local economy.
This year, Marathon Week begins on Friday, April 4, 2025, with trail runs and two lively Ocean's Marathon Expos. The main attraction, the tough 56km ultra marathon, will test runners on Saturday, April 5, 2025, starting at Newlands Main Road and closing within the seven-hour limit at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Rugby Field. The half marathon continues on Sunday, April 6th, following the 21.1km route through Claremont, Kenilworth, Winburg and Constantia.
Impact on international tourism
Two marine marathons are more than a sporting event. This has contributed greatly to the state's economy. The event has generated an estimated R672 million due to the impact of annual GDP (two Oceans Marathon, 2024) and supports over 4,000 jobs through tourism, logistics, hospitality and retail.
The 2025 marathon featured more than 4,500 international athletes from 98 countries, showing a record surge in global participation. Top contributors include Namibia (839), Zimbabwe (798) and the UK (337). Runners also travel from even further distances, including Mauritania, Malaysia and New Zealand.
Follow history and showcase talent
Men's races have historical weight, with athletes not successfully defending the title for more than 20 years. This is the last record that Zimbabwean Marco Mambo achieved in 2004 and 2005. All eyes are on champion Onarenna Konjobe, who recently revealed he has been managing illnesses during the day of the race. While this may bring a challenge, Khonkhobe remains a strong contender, and fans want to see if he can overcome the odds and etch his name again into two marine heritage.
On the women's side, the indomitable Gerda Stein is aiming for an unprecedented sixth consecutive title, further strengthening her legacy and excellence in South Africa's long-distance running.
Community Events and Expos
The marathon is a few days of health and culture festivals.
Friendship Run (April 4): A 5km route with 500 international participants exploring Sea Point and Green Point. Trail Run (April 4): Nature lovers' off-road challenge via Cape Town's green belt. Two Maritime Expos (April 3-5): Over 150 exhibitors introducing sports technology, nutrition and apparel.
