We will work on building SA's first independent, high altitude traffic circle known as Say Circle. The existing four-way intersection of Govan Mbeki Road (M9) and Jan Smuts Drive (M17) in Lansdowne will be converted into a raised circular structure about 6.2m above the ground.

The elevated circle is dedicated exclusively to Myciti buses and accommodates vehicle traffic between Nyanga, Strandfontein, Wynberg and Athlone.

By increasing the bus routes, the design aims to reduce congestion at ground level intersections and ensure more reliable and efficient public transport services.

In addition to the height circle, the project will include reconfiguring existing intersections, adding dedicated turning lanes, upgrading traffic signals, and providing dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. These enhancements are intended to improve overall traffic flow and safety for all road users.

Sky Circle rises

SkyCircle represents pioneering efforts in civil engineering in South Africa and reflects Cape Town's commitment to innovative infrastructure solutions to improve urban mobility.

“We are very proud that this is happening here in Cape Town,” said Councilman Rob Quintas, Urban Mobility Commissioner for the city's mayoral committee.

“The Metro South East My City expansion is the biggest financial investment in public transport by subways to date. The Sky Circle will be built in the transport circle. This means that every time road users and residents travel around the transport circle, we witness the advances in the engineering outcome.”

Quintas warned of traffic delays near construction sites. “The inconvenience is unfortunate. We appreciate their continued support and patience.

“I urge all road users to approach this intersection with caution, slow down warning signs and adhere to them, and always follow the directions of FLAG personnel.”

The Sky Circle appears to be set to be completed by the end of the year, the city said.
