Desalination is a scientific process of removing salt from seawater, and is further processed to make it safe and suitable for human consumption.
“Faced with climate change, unpredictable rainfall and population growth, this proposed plant forms part of the city’s various water intensification projects in the city’s new water program (NWP) and water strategy.
“The planned permanent desalination plant is expected to produce 50 million liters of water per day. Overall, the water strategy aims to increase the city's water supply by Zahid Badroadien, a member of the city's mayoral committee, in a statement Monday, saying the water strategy aims to increase the city's water supply by another 300 million liters from diversified sources.
Badroadien emphasized the importance of providing the public with a fair opportunity to share thoughtful, informed opinions on these issues.
“We encourage residents and stakeholders to submit comments by March 3, 2025. All feedback will be incorporated into the final completed feasibility study report, which will be made available to the community for comment before it is submitted to the council for consideration,” Badroadien said.
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend information sessions via Council Chambers, 6th Floor, Civic Centre, 12 Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town, or Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 from 6-8pm.
Explanation sessions will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm via the Milnerton Library, Milnerton, Cape Town, or the Microsoft Team.
