Johannesburg – The Water and Sanitation Department (DWS) has opened six valves in Wahldam.
The department said the valve was open at 12pm on Monday (March 24, 2025) and “to gradually increase the water runoff per 200 cubic metres as water levels rise at the dam (Mᵌ/s).”
The department said it was above a single lock gate that opened last week.
“The dam is currently in full capacity at 107.43% today,” the department said.
“In Bloemhof Dam, water release increased to 55 cubic meters (mᵌ/s) from 350.97 yesterday to 400 mᵌ/s, allowing for the additional flow expected from Vaal Dam.
“Currently, the dam's water level is 99.97%, and the goal is to keep it below 100%.”
The department said the water release at both dams was due to rising water levels as a result of continuous rainfall.
“Current water release through one lock gate, six valves at Vaal dam, and pipes at Bloemhof are within safe operational limits and are not expected to take away the top of the downstream riverbank,” the department said.
“The Department of Water and Sanitation continues to closely monitor the water levels at both dams.”
