JOHANNESBURG – The Takata airbag recall is the largest vehicle safety recall in history, affecting vehicles from 34 brands.
Defective airbags can deploy spontaneously, potentially causing serious injuries and even being life-threatening due to the solid debris released when the airbag inflates.
The South African Automobile Association (AA) announced on Friday 10 July 2026 that approximately 1,500 drivers have already had their vehicles inspected through the AA's Takata Airbag Recall campaign.
“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the inspections with safety first,” the AA said in a notice, warning drivers of the anomaly.
“Thanks to these tests, nearly 100 affected vehicles have already been identified through the AA’s Takata campaign.
“Behind every vehicle is a driver, a family, and an opportunity to prevent tragedy.”
AA added: “If you have already inspected your vehicle, thank you for helping us make South Africa’s roads safer.
“If you haven't checked it out yet, we recommend checking it out now.”
The AA offers two ways to contact you to check the status of your vehicle.
