MOSCOW – Preparations have begun for the launch of an unmanned train by the Moscow Metro.
“The first phase will be operated on nights without drivers and passengers,” said Maxim Rikstov, Moscow's mayor for transportation and industry, on Wednesday (19 March 2025).
“We have only just begun this year with a long journey to transition the metro to unmanned operation.
“This includes trains that do not have drivers and passengers.
“This is just the first stage of a long and challenging road, taking into account the strength of the traffic.”
Liksutov said in the first stage the night train will run to avoid interference with normal metro services.
He said the specially equipped train Moskva-2020 will be used in the first stage.
As directed by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobiyanin, the first phase of the launch of the innovative train is expected to begin at the Big Circle Line in 2025.
A 5th generation (5G) technology network is created to facilitate unmanned BCL operation and ensure reliable, ultra-high speed communication with the infrastructure.
Liksutov said the launch of the driverless operation will be a historic event for the capital Metro.
“This innovative project has great potential. It will serve as a platform for new technology solutions,” said Liksutov.
“Our priority is to be safe and maintain the shortest peak time interval in the world.
“After BCL, we'll gradually implement the technology on other lines.”
