MOSCOW – Moscow Metro has announced that it has signed the world's largest contract for the supply of new trains.

Moscow's metro said it is acquiring the MOSKVS-2024 series trains among the world's most technological advances.

These trains combine comfort and safety.

Maxim Rikstov, the deputy mayor of Moscow, who oversees the city's transportation and infrastructure department, said on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, that he will receive “more than 700 of the most modern cars in the Moskva-2026 series in 2026 and 2027.”

Liksutov added: “We will regularly update the rolling stock of the Moscow Metro under the directive of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobianin.

“This year, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, we signed the world's largest contract for the supply of new trains.”

Liksutov said that the Moskva-2026 series trains are currently operating on Zamoskvoretskaya and Metro's Troitskaya lines.

“By 2030, this figure will rise to over 90%, and modern train-free subways have no boundaries,” Liksutov said.

In related developments, the Moscow metro boasts that passengers enjoy 13 payment options in the capital transport system.

Liksutov said payment options include both traditional and most modern methods.

He said over 95% of passengers did not visit the ticket office, 98% did not purchase paper tickets, and 91.2% used contactless payments.

Liksutov said Moscow is leading the number of public transport fares payment methods.

“The developed ticketing system allows the city to print paper tickets and receipts to eliminate and exclude queues at the Metro Ticket Office,” says Liksutov.

“The Moscow government uses the most advanced domestic development to create the best payment system in the world.”

Moscow Mayor Sobianin continues his efforts to pay fares in urban transport that are even more convenient for all passengers.

Meanwhile, Moscow Metro said it was expanding its railway network, and the first section of line 17 was completely completed.

“The tunnel boring machine “Sophia” has successfully completed excavation of the second left-running tunnel from the under-constructed Zvenigorodskaya station to the underground demolition chamber near Sherepika, previously operated as part of the BCL,” explained Liksutov.

He said that shielding has overcome 348 meters in difficult geological conditions and it takes less than three months to complete the task.

Part of the route was excavated manually by miners using small mechanization tools.

“Once this work is completed, the entire mechanized tunneling of the 4.8 km long Sherepika to General Brubal Kalbisheva has been completed,” said Liksutov.

“Both new tunnels will be integrated with existing tunnels.”

Previously, the shields “Natali” and “Victoria” completed the first section as part of the construction of Line 17 between Zvenigorodskaya Station and Narodnoe Opolcheny, and then filled out the Brubal General Kalbisheva.

Line 17 connects Moscow International Business Centre “Moscow City” with the business district of Sbercity in the Smart District.

“There are 12 stations on this line and there are plans to expand to Krasnogorsk in the future,” Rikstov said.

“The first section of the new line will start working next year.”
