JOHANNESBURG – MTN is hit by cyberattacks, but a mobile telecommunications provider with over 289 million subscribers claims its critical infrastructure is secure.

In a statement on Thursday (April 24, 2025), the company said “There is no evidence of compromise on either the critical infrastructure, the core MTN platform or the services.”

The statement added: “The MTN Group wants to notify stakeholders of their experience of a cybersecurity incident that led to unauthorized access to the personal information of some MTN customers in certain markets.

“Our core network, billing systems and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational.

“Unknown third parties claim they have accessed data linked to parts of the system.

“At this stage there is no information that suggests that the customer's accounts and wallets are being compromised directly.”

The group said it quickly stimulated its cybersecurity response process, including notifications to South African police and South African Hawks.

“We will also continue to update on a continuous basis, working closely with them and law enforcement in supporting investigations,” MTN said.

“We are in the process of notifying affected customers in compliance with local legal and regulatory obligations.”

As a reminder, customers are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow regular security measures, including:

To mitigate fraudulent outcomes, you can place fraud warnings on your personal credit report at any of the major credit agencies.

Update your MTN, MOMO, bank apps and devices. Use a strong, unique password for your account and change it regularly. Have an unexpected message and don't click on suspicious links. If you are asked to do so by phone, text message or email, please do not disclose any passwords, pins, or OTPs. If multifactor authentication is available, it must be activated.

“Information privacy is our number one priority and MTN remains committed to protecting the systems and trust placed on us by our customers and other stakeholders,” MTN said.

“We will carefully contain and continue to manage this issue.”
