Pretoria – South African Police Service (SAPS) State Secretary Fannie Mesamora has urged residents and drivers to ignore WhatsApp messages that run rounds calling for a national shutdown.

SAPS said on Sunday night: “General Fanny Mesemora warns public members against the spread of WhatsApp messages calling for Haiten and the consulate to close, schools, US embassies and consulates, mobilizing communities to close target outlets, closing schools and spreading schools.”

General Masemora warned against lawlessness and said police and other law enforcement would be strongly wary on Monday, May 28, 2025.

General Masemola also warned against spreading problematic WhatsApp messages, including “fake news and false reports.”

“The public has been warned that this WhatsApp message is trying to instill fear, instill bully members and incite violence,” SAPS said.

“Therefore, it is recommended that public members ignore this WhatsApp message and refrain from sharing it further.”

General Masemora assures residents of Garten that Lt. Gen. Tommy Mutonbeni, the police under the command of the state secretary, is working closely with other law enforcement agencies.

Other agencies include Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Station, Tswane Metro Police Station, Ekulfrenimero Police Station, domestic and international transport authorities, and civil security.

General Masemora said the police and all these agencies were “highly vigilant and would not tolerate lawlessness.”

He added: “Everything from businesses, schools to services, is fully functional, operational and accessible,” he added.

General Masemora said there were no highway closures or road closures.

“We have no intention of allowing those who are found to be on the wrong side of the law to be lawless and criminal. They will be dealt with accordingly,” General Masemola warned.

He said the N1 Sandton, N1 Pretoria, M1 and M2 highways will be open.

SAPS ensures that Gauteng residents do not need to panic. All law enforcement agencies led by SAP are vigilant and by chance nothing remains.

“We are also calling on our community to work with us by distancing ourselves from lawlessness in the best interests of all those living in Garten,” Saps said.

“We ask all of Gauteng to say no to actions aimed at supporting the law and breaking the laws of the country.”
