Pretoria – Nuclear engineer and executive Riedewaan Bakardien is the new CEO of the National Institute for Radioactive Waste Management (NRWDI) next month.
In a statement on Monday (24th March 2025), Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and NRWDI Chairman Dorah Modise said, “We are pleased to announce the appointment of NRWDI as new CEO on April 1st, 2025 as NRWDI's new CEO.”
The statement said Bacardien brings extensive experience to the nuclear sector, leading NRWDI in the safe and efficient management of radioactive waste, is highly qualified to protect both current and future generations and protect the environment.
“In his previous role as Senior Vice President of Ontario Power Generation, Bacardien was responsible for overseeing the nuclear fleet's training, security, emergency management and innovation,” the statement said.
“He has made a significant contribution to the governance and performance assessment of the nuclear management system and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to nuclear safety.
“Before his tenure in Canada, Bacardian served as Eskom's Chief Nuclear Officer, where he was responsible for the nuclear operations and safety of the Kemberg Nuclear Power Plant.
“His extensive expertise in radioactive waste management and regulatory compliance positions him as an ideal leader at NRWDI.”
With over 15 years of experience in the nuclear industry, Bacardien has been in the role of a variety of senior leaders who promoted a strong safety culture and improved operational performance.
“He is truly grateful for the opportunity to lead NRWDI and is dedicated to moving forward that important mission,” the statement said.
