Durban – Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) Transport and Human Residence Mec Siboniso Duma has announced a “historic transition” to a cashless payment system for motor license offices that collect billions of rands.

“Following the surge in cash transport robberies at KZN, we would like to announce that yesterday (April 1, 2025) we have made a historic transition to cashless payment systems at our state motor license offices.”

Recent crime statistics show that between October 2024 and December 2024 there were 29 cash robbers in the country.

KZN was the most common in 10 cases, followed closely by Gauteng, who recorded eight robberies.

“We are embracing this change and are encouraged by the public who are currently using debit and credit cards in the Motor License Office,” says Mec Duma.

“We believe adopting digital evolution will help the sector save a cent and help fund this Democratic government service delivery program.”

Mec Duma added: “I would like to announce that this fiscal year 2024/2025 has collected more than R2.3 billion from the Motor License Office.

“This money is being redirected to the Treasury for further allocation to health, education, social development, water, electricity, home construction, road construction and other government sectors.

“Finally, we congratulate our hardworking management team and staff in all categories of license offices for inspiring hope for a better future.”
