Johannesburg – Luno announced it has launched tokenized stocks and ETFs, making South Africans easy to access 61 US-listed companies and indexes in the world.
According to Luno, the 44 was available today on August 4, 2025, with the rest being released soon.
Luno added: “Users can invest directly using Rands via the Luno app without transferring funds offshore.
Customers can invest in the largest global stocks, including Apple, Amazon, Google, Intel, and S&P 500.
“To date, access to global financial markets has been locked behind currency conversions, inconvenient time zones and offshore allowance restrictions. Investors have options they have never seen before.”
“We provide historical data for informed decision-making. Investors are also safe in the knowledge that tokenized stocks are fully supported by actual stocks held in regulated custody.
“All dividends will be reinvested.”
Breakthroughs in financial access
Luno said it addresses the challenges faced by emerging market investors, where fees for multiple tiers, critical latency and complex processes limit traditional investment options.
Luno is resolving these barriers while maintaining security and regulatory compliance, tokenized stocks remove these barriers.
“You can purchase Luno's tokenized inventory directly on Rand. You don't have to worry about pairing certain coins,” says De Wit.
“In addition, there is no need to convert foreign currency or pay foreign exchange fees.
“Instead of paying nearly R4,000 for Apple shares, you can use tokenized fractional shares to buy some to fit your pocket.
“This makes global investment more affordable for all South Africans.”
Immediate settlements are also available, and there is no lock-in period. In other words, assets remain liquid.
How tokenized inventory works
Tokenized assets are fully supported by real stocks held in regulated custody through integration with Luno's global partners, such as Kraken's Xstocks and Bucked Finance, which provide reliable infrastructure.
Tokenized stocks represent a digital version of traditional stocks, allowing investors to buy and sell parts of a company through blockchain technology.
It is currently available in South Africa and plans to expand to Nigeria and other African markets.
