JOHANNESBURG – The South African Post Office (SAPO) has announced that it will now provide electronic distribution of legally served Road Traffic Offenses Administrative Tribunal (AARTO) notices.
As South Africa's designated postal operator under the Universal Postal Union framework, SAPO said it provides electronic distribution of legally served AARTO notices.
SAPO also revealed that the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has launched the second phase of the national AARTO electronic communications framework.
This will support the nationwide implementation of the AARTO program, which will be implemented nationwide from July 1, 2026.
The declaration was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 24 June 2026.
This second phase will be implemented in 62 metropolitan areas and local governments across the country.
“By using electronic communication channels such as WhatsApp, SMS, MMS and email, motorists can receive notifications delivered safely and legally with increased speed, efficiency and traceability,” SAPO explained in a statement published on The Bull Rush today, Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Fatima Ghani, SAPO's Acting Chief Executive Officer, said: “SAPO is leveraging SAPO's e-Reg platform for AARTO notifications, launched in September 2024, and has successfully provided customers with secure and legally recognized electronic delivery of official notifications.”
The strategic collaboration between RTIA and SAPO will support AARTO's national expansion through a secure and scalable communications platform that strengthens governance, improves service delivery, and enhances customer experience.
In a statement, SAPO and RTIA said they will continue to work with local governments to ensure the robust implementation of the AARTO program.
