JOHANNESSBURG – The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that it has extended its opening hours for five hours on Saturday, May 2025.
In a brief statement available to Bullushess, the department said that the extension of opening hours at the front office is to help naturalized citizens and permanent residents apply for smart ID cards.

All offices offering smart ID cards will operate for extended opening hours the following weekend and hours.
Saturday, May 17th, 2025: 08:00 – 13:00 Saturday, May 24th, 2025: 08:00 – 13:00 May 31st, 2025: 08:00 – 13:00
“Times extended to designated weekends can own greenbarcoded ID books and process smart ID card applications from naturalized citizens and permanent residents of listed countries,” the department explained.
“We encourage naturalized citizens and permanent residents of listed countries to take advantage of this opportunity.
“This will bring you to fully adopt a more secure smart ID card and bring you closer to eliminating the green barcoded ID book.”
