Tap running on part of Soshanguve: Warn that Tshwane city could get worse

Pretoria – The city of Tshwane warns that more taps in Soshanguve could dry out unless residents use the water available in moderation.

“Soshanguve L Reservoir continues to experience excessively high water consumption, which is likely to face the risk that a large portion of Soshanguve will not have water in the coming days,” the city warned over the weekend.

“Even though we have sufficient supply from the land water supply line, reservoir levels cannot exceed 30%.

“These very low levels make it unsafe for urban engineers to pump water into the Soshanguve L Tower Zone, which supplies schools and clinics in Block L, M, K and LKK.”

The city said these areas are free of water from Friday, August 1, 2025 “due to the low water levels at Soshan L Reservoir.”

In a statement on Sunday, August 3, 2025, the city said: “Yesterday, the team significantly restricted the flow of the reservoir outlet to support the reservoir recovery process. However, levels increased by only 8% this morning.”

The city added: “To counter this continuing, significant decline, urban engineers may be forced to implement aggressive measures, including a temporary shutdown of supply to the larger Soshan region, to ensure that the reservoirs are sufficiently recovered to allow pumping into the tower zone.

“If customers supplied by Soshanguve L Reservoir can reduce consumption and raise the reservoir level to at least 60%, these drastic measures can be avoided.”

The city is calling on Sosangub residents who are still using water to ensure they can use it for modest use so that the city can resume water supply to affected areas.
