MOSCOW – The Moscow metropolis (https://mosmetro.ru/) has reached its 90th year of operation and marked an important milestone in one of the world's largest and longest-running urban transport systems.
Since taking office in 1935, the system has expanded to cover over 550km of trucks, with 302 stations offering an average of 8 million passenger travel per weekday.
Maxim Rikstov, mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, said:
“Even so, decades ago, workers and builders set the highest standards of passenger service.
“Today, we continue to support that standard in line with the goal set by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobianin. Today, over 65,000 people are employed in the Moscow metropolitan area.
“Each trip leaves a positive impression as they not only help serve millions of passengers every day, but also work hard to gain the ongoing trust of the madman.
“We appreciate all our employees' dedication and wish them ongoing success.”
First launched on a single line ranging from 11.5 km and 13 stations, Moscow's metropolis has steadily expanded over the past 90 years.
In 2024 alone, the system transported 2.7 billion passengers.
Modernization is an ongoing process.
Today, over 75% of trains are newly developed models with features such as automatic speed control, open gangways, and updated safety systems.
These advances allow high-frequency operations at shorter 90 seconds at peak times.
The system also implements digital ticketing solutions such as smart cards, virtual ticket options and biometric payments, and is currently used for most of daily travel.
These technologies aim to streamline passenger flow and improve accessibility.
To commemorate the anniversary, a series of events and exhibitions were held throughout the city, highlighting both the history and evolution of the metro system.
A public display featuring restored early generation trains and archival materials that document the development of the network.
As one of the world's heavily used metro systems, Moscow Metro continues to play a central role in urban transport, reflecting the broader trends in infrastructure investment, technology integration and mass transport development over the past century.
