Durban – The United States-Africa Trade Commission (USATC) has postponed the formal launch of its South African chapter and accompanying two-day summit scheduled for June 18-19 at the Durban International Convention Center.
USATC said the decision followed consultation with stakeholders and partners, stressing that the postponement is aimed at ensuring the event achieves its “intended strategic effect” and provides a strong foundation for promoting trade, investment, innovation, and institutional cooperation between Africa and the United States.
Despite the postponement, USATC reaffirmed its commitment to its mission and long-term goals in South Africa and across the continent.
Preparatory work will continue to build partnerships, promote trade and investment opportunities, and advance economic cooperation initiatives.
The summit was designed as a landmark gathering of government leaders, diplomatic representatives, traditional leaders, business executives, development finance institutions, academics and investors.
Its agenda focused on economic growth, investment promotion, industrial development and cross-border cooperation.
The establishment of a South African branch remains a strategic priority of the European Commission.
South Africa is said to play a vital role in Africa's economic landscape, serving as a gateway for trade, investment, and regional integration.
USATC said it remains committed to building sustainable institutional bridges to strengthen commercial, academic, and development partnerships between Africa and the United States.
Professor Gostina “Gabby” Malope’s appointment as South Africa Director continues as part of the rescheduled programme.
USATC said it looks forward to formally introducing the South African chapter and its leadership to stakeholders at the appropriate time.
Although the launch event has been postponed, USATC said it will continue to build a platform that fosters strategic partnerships, supports business development, fosters investment opportunities, promotes market access, and fosters shared prosperity between African economies and the United States.
USATC expressed its gratitude to the authorized delegates, speakers, sponsors, partners, diplomatic missions, government representatives, and business leaders who expressed their support for the summit.
USATC said a revised date would be announced after further consultation and logistics planning.
