JOHANNESBURG – With a BCom in Business Management and Marketing and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science, Ayanda Nxumalo is creating opportunities for young people to acquire digital skills.

In this regard, Mr Nxumalo, who describes himself as a purpose-driven leader, youth development advocate and digital transformation strategist, will launch the free FutureU Technology Bootcamp 2026 in Johannesburg from June 29 to July 4, 2026.

Her professional career spans the telecommunications, consulting and financial services industries in South Africa and the UK, where she gained valuable international exposure and experience in leading teams, managing stakeholders and implementing large-scale transformation initiatives.

Speaking to The Bull Rushes on Friday, June 26, 2026, Nxumalo revealed that he was a manager at First National Bank (FNB) until March 2026.

Nxumalo said he led the growth of business analytics capabilities within the data and analytics environment at FNB.

“My work focused on enabling smarter decisions through data-driven insights, process optimization, and automation,” she said.

“But I realized that beyond corporate success, my true purpose was to empower young people and create opportunities to change lives at scale.

“This led me to focus my efforts on building FutureU, a bold youth development initiative focused on helping learners and students unlock their potential and make informed decisions about their future.”

Nxumalo describes his vision: “As CEO of Mazwide Enterprises, I will continue to lead innovative efforts at the intersection of technology, education, and social impact.

“Through FutureU, we are building a movement aimed at closing the skills gap by providing young people with future career, technology, entrepreneurship and personal development opportunities, especially in underserved communities.

“Our mission is to not only inspire the next generation, but also provide them with the confidence, knowledge and support they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy.”

Impressed by her stated mission, The Bulllashes asked Nxumalo a few questions to further assess her commitment to young people.

Is this the first bootcamp you’ve hosted?

yes. This is the very first FutureU Technology & Innovation Bootcamp and will serve as our pilot program.

This is our first bootcamp, but it's the beginning of a bigger vision.

We are using this pilot to refine our curriculum, measure impact, gather feedback from learners and partners, and build a sustainable model that can be scaled up to schools and communities across South Africa.

Our goal is to make FutureU one of the nation's leading youth technology and innovation programs.

Please tell us more about what your students will achieve.

Our goal is not just to teach students about technology, but to change the way they think about their future.

Over six days, learners explore emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, cybersecurity, digital transformation, smart energy, and entrepreneurship.

They develop problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and presentation skills while tackling real-world challenges that impact their communities.

By the end of the program, all learners will have a clearer understanding of their future careers, the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing world, and the confidence to pursue opportunities they have never considered before.

We want all students to go home believing that innovation doesn't just happen overseas. It can start with them.

After a six-day immersive learning experience designed to expose students to forward-looking technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and career opportunities, what happens next?

Bootcamp is just the beginning.

FutureU is designed to be a long-term support network, not a one-time event.

After completing the program, learners remain part of the FutureU community and continue to receive information about scholarships, scholarships, career opportunities, technology events, and mentorship programs.

The winning innovation team will participate in a special three-day robotics program at SciBono to learn more about robotics and engineering.

As FutureU grows, we aim to connect learners with industry leaders, engage them with universities, career expos and technology organizations, and help them access scholarships and other opportunities after completing Year 12.

We want to journey with our learners beyond the classroom.

At what level of education are students eligible to attend bootcamp?

The bootcamp is currently aimed at learners in grades 10, 11, and 12. These are critical years when young people begin to make important career decisions.

Our programs are designed to give students a deeper understanding of educational pathways that will prepare them for success in future industries, new careers, and a technology-driven economy.

Is there a certification after completing the bootcamp?

yes. All learners who successfully complete the 6-day program will receive an official FutureU Certificate of Completion that recognizes their participation in the Technology & Innovation Bootcamp.

Beyond the certification itself, learners graduate with practical knowledge, project experience, interactions with industry experts, and portfolio-worthy innovation projects that demonstrate their ability to think creatively and solve real-world problems.

How many students are participating?

Our pilot cohort consisted of 100 learners aged 15 to 18, representing grades 10 to 12.

The program brought together both male and female learners from different schools across Soweto.

One of our priorities is to ensure that young women are equally represented and encouraged to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and innovation, and to help close the gender gap in these industries.

How were students selected? Did they have to pay to attend the bootcamp?

Participation in the bootcamp is completely free.

Learners were recruited through multiple channels, including live interviews on Jozi FM where parents and learners registered their interest, and direct engagement with schools across Soweto who introduced the FutureU initiative.

This program is fully funded out of my own pocket. Because we strongly believe that economic circumstances should not prevent young people from accessing opportunities that can change their futures.

We are extremely grateful for the support of our partners, including Ingenious Holdings, Nedbank, Eskom, University of Johannesburg, Sci-Bono and Coach Itu Academy, who generously provided their expertise, speakers and learning experiences.

Although budget constraints prevented us from providing financial sponsorship this year, the willingness to invest your time and knowledge has added tremendous value to this program.

This bootcamp proves that meaningful change begins when organizations and individuals come together around a common purpose: empowering South Africa's next generation.

During the bootcamp, students will participate in hands-on workshops, collaborative innovation challenges, mentoring sessions, and industry engagement opportunities to prepare for the digital future.

Are you planning to enroll somewhere after the bootcamp?

Yes, our learners are still in high school, but our vision extends far beyond these six days.

The winning team will receive a special three-day robotics course at Sci-Bono, providing further exposure to advanced technology and innovation.

Additionally, we are building FutureU into a long-term mentorship and development ecosystem.

Our first group will continue to stay connected through our dedicated WhatsApp community, where we will continue to share scholarship opportunities, internships, career guidance, university open days, technology events, and youth development programs.

As we expand our network of partners, we hope to match learners with industry mentors and help them secure scholarships and other opportunities beyond Year 12.

Ultimately, FutureU aims to be a platform that follows learners throughout their learning journey and helps them bridge the gap between school and a meaningful career.

South Africa has no shortage of talented young people. What many people lack is access.

FutureU exists to bridge that gap by providing opportunities, technology, and careers never imagined to learners, especially those from underserved communities.

If we can inspire just one young person to believe in their potential, choose a promising career, and become an innovator who solves problems in their communities, we have already begun to change lives.

This pilot is just the first step in developing a generation of young South Africans who are ready to shape the future, not just adapt to it.
